Description:
Purpose
The SVO Slider was designed to assess social motivations in interdependent decisions. By assessing how participants prefer to divide resources between themselves and another person, the slider distinguishes between common social value orientations (i.e., altruistic, prosocial, individualistic, and competitive). An optional secondary set of items distinguishes between two motivations: joint maximization and inequality aversion. The SVO Slider yields results on the ratio level of measurement and is sensitive enough to be used as either an IV or a DV.

Sample items

- Participants are randomly and anonymously matched. They are then presented with a series of resource allocation questions. For each question, they must choose their most preferred joint outcome, which determines how much money they will receive as well as how much money some other anonymous person will receive.
