Society for Judgment and Decision Making Annual Meeting

Poster Presentation Guidelines for The Society for Judgment and Decision-Making Annual Meeting

A poster must be a single page, with font large that is easy to read from a foot away. Your poster should be readable in 5 minutes or less. Please include all of the relevant information so that your poster is understandable even if you are not present to explain it.

The maximum dimensions are 8 ft wide and 4 ft high. We recommend a poster that is 48 inches wide x 36 inches high.

Poster Session Times are listed on the conference program. You must register for the conference in order to upload or present your poster. Register today at https://sjdm.org/members/confreg.php.

Live Poster Sessions: Guidelines and Schedule

Session Assignment: Your poster has been scheduled for one of two sessions, as specified in the conference program. Ensure you are present during your allotted session to engage in valuable discussions and answer questions from SJDM attendees regarding your poster content.

Setup Instructions:

Advanced preparation of your poster is strongly recommended to assure efficient setup and breakdown. Your adherence to these guidelines will facilitate a smooth and productive poster session for all attendees.

Poster Elements:

Main components: The title of each section on the poster should be at least 60 point in size. Bulleted or numbered statements (main points) should be at least 48 point, additional text should not be smaller than 24 point, and acknowledgments and references should not be less than 18 point.

Title: Should be one sentence describing the main message of the poster, authors’ names, and professional affiliations. We recommend a 72 point font.

Abstract: 1 paragraph summarizing the main points of the poster.

Intro: 1-4 paragraphs/panels in length.

Methods: 1-2 paragraphs/panels that describe techniques used.

Results: All figures should include titles and figure captions (e.g. legends). Include a brief description of the tests you ran that produced these figures. The Results and Discussion sections may be combined.

Discussion: 1-2 paragraphs/panels describing the results and conclusions.

References: List of important references used, in APA format.

Style (suggested guidelines):

a. Font: Type-face should be easy to read, such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier. It is better to use bold print than all caps when trying to emphasize a point. Use the same type‐face throughout your entire poster.

b. Color: Black text on white background is generally best. Although you may incorporate color into your poster, avoid using brightly colored background. You can most effectively use color (e.g. red) in your text to highlight the most important points, such as research objectives, important findings, and their significance. Keep in mind that too much color is distracting.

c. Bullets: If your bulleted statements are in large font (at least 48 point), your audience will know within a minute what your research objectives were, what you found, and how your findings fit into the larger picture.

d. Text: Your poster will be most effective if there is minimal text for the reader. Avoid long descriptions and explanations, and stick to short, concise sentences that you can elaborate on if asked to do so.

Poster example:

In case you haven't seen a conference poster before, here is an example poster from 2019, in powerpoint format (often used for creating posters) and here is an example in PDF format (the required format for submission to the poster archive and for the student poster award). Several examples of previous posters can be found under “Best Student Poster Award” at http://www.sjdm.org/history.html#awards
