The J/DM Newsletter welcomes submissions from individuals and groups. However, we do not publish substantive papers. Book reviews will be published. If you are interested in reviewing books and related materials, please write to the editor.

There are few ground rules for submissions. The best way to send your contribution is via EMAIL or a 3.5" diskette. Send an IBM-compatible text file or word-processed document up to versions WordPerfect 8 or Word 7.0 for Windows 95. If you must send hard-copy (e.g., if you are using special graphics or do not have computer access), please submit camera-ready copy. This means that the copy should be typed single-spaced on white 8 1/2 by 11 paper. If possible, use a carbon or film ribbon. Please mail flat -- do not fold.

Subscriptions: Subscriptions are available on a calendar year basis only. Requests for information concerning membership in the Society for Judgment and Decision Making should be sent to Colleen Moore.

Advertising Rates: Advertising can be submitted to the editor. Inclusion of the ad and the space given to the ad is at the editor's discretion. The current charge is $100 per page to cover production and mailing costs. Contact Shawn Curley for details. Alternatively, you can use--

Mailing Labels: Some readers may wish to send reprint lists or other material to people listed in the directory. The current charge is $125 for a set of labels. Contact Colleen Moore for details. Because the J/DM Newsletter is usually sent by bulk mail, copies with incorrect addresses or which are otherwise undeliverable are neither forwarded nor returned. 1998 MEETING: EINHORN AWARD

HILLEL EINHORN NEW INVESTIGATOR AWARD FOR 1998

The Society for Judgment and Decision Making is soliciting submissions for the Hillel Einhorn New Investigator Award. The growth and vitality of the field of judgment and decision making depends upon the continuing involvement and participation of new researchers. The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage outstanding work by new researchers. Eligible individuals either have not yet completed their Ph.D. or have completed their Ph.D. within the last five years (on or after July 1, 1993).

To be considered, submit four copies of a journal-style manuscript on any topic related to judgment and decision making. Submissions should be accompanied by (1) four copies of a summary or extended abstract of the paper, not to exceed four pages in length, and (2) a cover letter that includes the name of the investigator's graduate advisor and the date that the Ph.D. degree was awarded (if applicable). If the paper is co-authored with other investigators, the new investigator must be the first author and should be the primary source of the ideas. Submissions in dissertation format will not be considered, but articles based on a dissertation are encouraged. Both reprints of published articles and manuscripts that have not yet been published are acceptable.

Submissions will be judged by a committee appointed by the Society and chaired by Eric J. Johnson. To be considered, submissions must be received by July 1, 1998. The committee will announce the results to the participants by September 15, 1998. The award will be announced and presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, to be held in Dallas on November 21-23, 1998. The winner will be invited to give a presentation at that meeting. If the winner can not obtain full funding from his or her own institution to attend the meeting, an application may be made to the Society for supplemental travel funds.

TO PROPOSE A SYMPOSIUM
Symposia are usually allotted about 90 minutes each and include 3 or 4 speakers and perhaps a discussant. Submit a 100-200-word description of the intended theme and format of the session. Attach a list of intended participants, including for each his or her address, phone, and e-mail, and a brief description (100 words) of the topic of his or her talk. Please confirm the speakers' willingness to participate prior to submitting their names. Any topic related to decision making is welcome, as are proposals for a teaching forum. SYMPOSIA PROPOSALS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED!

TO SUBMIT AN INDIVIDUAL PAPER
Submit: (1) a one-page abstract of the paper, and (2) a short 100- word version of your abstract. (The program committee will evaluate the one-page abstract; the 100-word abstract will be printed in the program if the paper is accepted.) Indicate whether you would be willing to present your paper as a poster if an individual paper slot is not available.

TO SUBMIT A POSTER
Submit a short abstract of no more than 100 words (word limit will be strictly enforced). Indicate whether the submission is eligible for the student prize (i.e., whether the first author is a student member of the J/DM Society). You may be the first author on a maximum of 1 poster submission. (Therefore, if you are also the first author of a submitted paper which is later converted to a poster, you may present only 1 of the resulting 2 posters. Please anticipate this contingency and indicate which of the resulting posters you would present.)

TO NOMINATE AN INVITED SPEAKER
The program committee of the annual J/DM meeting invites JDM members to nominate invited speakers for the meeting. The speakers can be:

               (a)  Active members of the society who have made
          major original contributions to our field. The invited 
          presentation should provide them with an
          opportunity to present their work in more detail 
          and/or in a broader context;

               (b)  Distinguished scholars or public figures who are not
          necessarily directly involved in J/DM research, but 
          whose work is related and relevant to our field.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The board recently finalized its new committee assignments. I would like to thank everybody who volunteered his or her time, energy, and expertise to serve the society in various ways. And welcome to the new committee members!

The Einhorn Memorial Young Investigator Award Committee will this year be composed of Eric Johnson (Chair), Lola Lopes, and Eldar Shafir.

Finally, the new Student Poster Award Committee will consist of Sandy Schneider (Chair), Claudia Gonzalez-Vallejo, Jim Holzworth, J.D. Jasper, Marlys Lipe, and Alan Schwartz.

Service on J/DM committees is generally for a three-year term, with a third of all members rotating off in any given year. For the newly formed committees, length of service was staggered to achieve the 3-year rotation as a steady state.

I also want to thank those of you who took the time to send nominations for this year's board member and presidential election. Your suggestions have been noted. Society bylaws mandate that a call for nominations goes out in the June newsletter. The nominations forms will be available as usual, to be returned to Colleen Moore. Please look for the form in the next issue of the newsletter.

The Decision Analysis Society is a subdivision of INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences). Membership in INFORMS for 1988 is $85 for a regular membership, or $21 for a retired or student membership. 1998 DECISION ANALYSIS PUBLICATION AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Society for Decision Analysis of INFORMS is soliciting nominations for the 1998 Decision Analysis Publications Award. The award, which includes a plaque and a $750 honorarium, is given annually to the publication (i.e., article, book, chapter, monograph) judged to be the best publication in Decision Analysis, broadly defined, during the second calendar year prior to the year in which the award is given. The purpose of the time lag is to allow for publications to be disseminated, read, and their impact evaluated. This call for nominations is for 1996 publications. Authors may nominate their own publication. Nominations, with a copy of the nominated publication, should be sent to:

1998 STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION IN DECISION ANALYSIS

Each year the Decision Analysis Society of INFORMS solicits student papers on decision analysis, typically (but not necessarily) based upon a Ph.D. dissertation or Master's thesis. These papers are evaluated by a panel of judges and the winner is invited to the fall INFORMS meeting where the result of the competition is announced.

If you are a faculty member who is supervising students, would you please inform them of this opportunity? If your students are not currently members of DAS, you might also encourage them to join. If you are a student reading this, please encourage your classmates to submit a paper and to join the society. DAS is a congenial organization of close to 800 members (of which almost 200 are students) and there has been a rise in recent student participation. Joining DAS seems to be a good start toward developing a professional identity. However, students do not need to be DAS members to be eligible for the competition.

All students doing work in or related to decision analysis are encouraged to submit a paper. The work must be predominately that of the student, though faculty members or other mentors can be co-authors if appropriate. The paper should be 30 pages or less (double-spaced) and in standard Management Science or Operations Research format.

SOFTWARE SURVEY
In the February 1998 issue of OR/MS Today (pp. 42-55), a publication of INFORMS, Jack Yurkiewicz (Lubin School of Business, Pace University) presented a survey of 40 forecasting software packages. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Emory University

The Goizueta Business School of Emory University announces a tenure-track faculty position opening in the Decision & Information Analysis (DIA) area, commencing in September, 1998. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in an discipline relating to Decision Analysis (Statistics, Management Science, Operations Research, Decision Sciences). The rank of the position is open, although preference will be given to candidates with two or more years of experience.

Applicants should have a significant record of scholarship, professional achievement, leadership ability, and a successful record of teaching quantitative methods at the MBA level. Ideal candidates will have interests beyond their primary discipline in at least one other of the other two DIA disciplines: Operations Management and MIS/IT.

Post-Doctoral Position in Psychology and Public Policy in the Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University for 1998-99.

The Woodrow Wilson School offers up to two postdoctoral research positions to individuals with a recent Ph.D. degree in Psychology or in Business. A good background in behavioral decision research is essential. The positions are offered for one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension. In addition to carrying out their own research, the appointee will be expected to assist in the development of materials for a graduate course in Introduction to Psychology for Policy and to participate in the evaluation of written work by students in the course. Postdoctoral Position in SOCIAL DECISION MAKING: Training in theory and research in judgment and decision making, and social psychology. Funded by the Naval Research Laboratory. Opportunities for basic and applied research. Work with a multidisciplinary team of 15 graduate students and faculty in social and organizational psychology and artificial intelligence on projects concerning uncertainty assessment, Judge-Advisor Systems and crisis decision making. University of Michigan

Postdoctoral Research Position in COGNITIVE INFORMATION-PROCESSING to work on an AFOSR funded
project entitled "Foundations of Stimulus-Response and Stimulus-Stimulus Compatibility." The project will focus on extending our recently developed PDP formulation of the dimensional overlap model to encompass inter-trial, in addition to the usual intra-trial, compatibility effects in human performance. Our interests include task switching, negative priming and other sequential effects, as well as the effects of similarity and learning, and the role of automatic and controlled processes in S-R/S-S compatibility tasks. Anyone with training and demonstrated ability and competence in any one of the following areas is invited to apply: (1) Cognitive/experimental psychology with an emphasis on human performance and information processing; (2) Cognitive science/mathematical psychology, with an emphasis on the study of priming or similarity, and the modeling of mental processes.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

The Center for Outcomes Research, an inter-departmental center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is recruiting an expert in the measurement of utility, assessment of quality of life and the valuation of health outcomes. The Center for Outcomes Research (COR) seeks to develop methodologies in health services research, with an emphasis on the development of pediatric outcomes measures. The Center conducts outcomes studies, and serves as a resource to investigators at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and at the University of Pennsylvania.

The position entails development and estimation of utility-based outcome measures, and the development of methodologies in pediatric outcomes research. This faculty position also involves limited teaching and student advising responsibilities and collaboration with other faculty associated with the Center for Outcomes Research.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in health services research, health economics, decision science, psychology or a related field, and a background in outcomes research. The position requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary team engaged in pediatric outcomes research.

The selected candidate will receive an appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and in the Department of Anesthesia at the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania. A position is available at the Assistant or
