JANE BEATTIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 2023

The Jane Beattie Memorial Scholarship is sponsored jointly by the Society for Judgment and Decision Making and the European Association for Decision Making. On behalf of both organizations, we invite applications for awards from the Jane Beattie Memorial Fund. This fund was established in memory of SJDM and EADM member Jane Beattie and her contributions to judgment and decision research. A book preface, dedicated to Jane Beattie and her research can be found here (“Conflict and Tradeoffs in Decision Making”, 2001, eds. E. Weber, J. Baron, & G. Loomes).
The purpose of the fund this year is to provide scholarships to subsidize travel to the United States to attend the annual SJDM meeting. The ultimate goal is to support judgment and decision scholars who are not able to attend SJDM due to lack of funding. All scholars from institutions outside of the United States are eligible to apply. Previous award winners are listed here.

The Beattie award committee especially encourages students to apply and will give priority to applicants who have had an oral presentation accepted to the SJDM conference.

Applications will be accepted until Friday October 20, 2023, end of day EST. The JBMF Committee plans to make all award decisions by November 1, 2023. This year the committee anticipates making up to 10 awards of $750 and conference registration waivers.

In addition to the main award, this year the JBMF Committee will be awarding up to 10 conference registration waivers to applicants for the Jane Beattie Memorial Scholarship who come from under-represented institutions. The goal of these waivers is to support members from institutions who are often not able to attend SJDM due to lack of funding.

The required application form can be downloaded here. Submit applications via e-mail via attachments in .pdf (preferred), Word, or .rtf format to natalia.karelaia@insead.edu, with the subject "Beattie Application 2023".

About the Beattie Scholarship

Applicants should be scholars living and working outside the United States who will use the award to help pay for the costs of attending SJDM. It is anticipated that most awards will be granted to early-career faculty or advanced graduate students at colleges and universities, but others will also be considered.

Applicants should submit the application form, a copy of their curriculum vitae, and a one-page description of why they would be a good candidate for this award as well as the planned scholarly activities they anticipate to participate in at SJDM. If the applicant submitted a presentation to SJDM, they should include the title and short abstract of the presentation in this document.

Awards will be granted on the basis of the committee's estimate of the prospective value of the proposed activity, its relevance to the field of judgment and decision research, the scholarly credentials of the applicant, and the extent to which the award would contribute to the applicant’s success (including considerations of financial and academic need). Questions can be directed to the committee chair, Natalia Karelaia, at natalia.karelaia@insead.edu.
